The database design will have entities including, Instructor, Instructor Course, Course, Student Course, Students, Course Place, and Place. The main attributes of Instructor entity are instructor ID, name, address, phone numbers, types, email addresses, email types, gender, birthdate, and grade. The instructor ID will be the primary key of the instructor table. The Instructor Course entity will have instructor ID, course ID, address, and grade as the attributes. Instructor ID will be the primary key. Furthermore, the course entity will encompass entities such as course ID, course name, department, quarters offered, sections, instructor ID, grade, and birth date. Course ID will be the primary key. The attributes of student course table will be course ID, Student ID and score. The student ID is the primary key, which is unique (Naiburg & Maksimchuck, 2001). The student entity will encompass attributes such as student ID, name, address, start date, phone number, email address, gender, and birthdate. The student ID will be the primary key. The attributes of the course place table place ID, which is the primary key and course place. Consequently, the place entity will encompass attributes such as place ID, building, size and type. The place ID will be the primary key.
Assumptions
The college tracks students via their student ID enrolling in a particular course. With this, the association between students and courses is many to many relationship. The assumption is that students can enrol in many courses, which the college offers. Additionally, there is a link between instructor and course entity as the Visio diagram depicts. An instructor will teach a course, which he is well qualified. The instructor course will show student’s grade at the completion of the course. With this assumption, the instructor and course entity has one to one relationship. An instructor can only teach the course that is well qualified to tutor the students. Most importantly, we are assuming that the institution offers these courses from various location of the school. It implies that we consider the classroom, lecture hall or course place. The link between the courses and course place entity is many to many relationship. It means that the college can track many courses, which it offers to places in the school. This approach outlines the means in which the entities are functionally linked to each other or cardinality (Blaha, 2013).
