Observing and documenting children’s development and learning is important to view and comprehend the strengths and shortcoming of every child. When we are able to understand the personality of the individual child, we would be able to reach and teach that particular child. It comprises a record of the child’s behaviour, how he/she can learn, respond and work together with others. By being closely watched, it can likewise address the needs of the observed child. By understanding and examine their behaviours and personality traits from the observation, it could help the people around the child by reinforcement their relationship with the child in a more meaningful means.

There are a total of nine different types of observation and documentation of children’s learning such as Narrative Descriptions, Time Sampling, Even Sampling, Diary Records, Anecdotal Records, Frequency Counts, Duration Records, Checklists and, Rating Scales.
The Narrative Descriptions is a formal method of recording behaviour with rigorous detail and predetermined criteria such as time of day, person and setting. Time Sampling is used to observe whether a particular behaviour occurs during the specified time. Event Sampling is to study the conditions under which particular behaviours occur. Diary Records is used to record in sequence new behavioural events in the behaviour continuum of an individual. Anecdotal Records is a brief narrative account describing an incident of a child’s behaviour that is important to observe. They describe an event in a factual and objective manner. Frequency Counts is when the observer makes a mark on an observation sheet each time a predetermined behaviour occurs. Duration Records is a variation of the frequency counts. It is used when the length of a behaviour is more useful than just its frequency. Checklists are used to record the occurrence of specific behaviours in a given context. Rating Scales is an observation tool that indicates the degree to which a person possesses a certain trait or behaviour.
I have chosen to do Narrative Records (Running Records) as it is much more detailed as compared to Anecdotal Record. By providing a detailed recording of the child, it will be useful for developmental assessments, sharing information with parents, planning environments for children, and learning about child developments.
I made an observation by using Checklist for assignment too as it is very quick and easy to use. They can be used to record observations for any circumstance, and does not require the educator to use up a lot effort by recording information.
