SLOPE STABILITY ANALYSIS using slope/W software
Slope stability analysis is performed to assess the safe design of a human-made or natural slopes (such as embankments, road cuts, excavations, landfills etc.) and the equilibrium conditions. Slope stability is the resistance of inclined surface to failure by sliding or collapsing. The main objectives of slope stability analysis are investigation of potential failure mechanisms, determination of the slope sensitivity to different triggering mechanisms and designing of optimal slopes with regard to safety, reliability and economics, designing possible remedial measures, e.g. barriers and stabilization.
SLOPE/W program designed and developed to be a general software tool for the stability analysis of earth structures. SLOPE/W uses the theory of limit equilibrium of forces and moments to compute the factor of safety. SLOPE/W is used for 2-D modeling of slope stability. Within the program the problem outline is set for scale, page size, units and grid. Then, the material properties are defined. The analysis type is then selected and it is determined that failure will follow a right to left path. The profile of the landfill is drawn and is further analyzed. Then it gives the most critical slip surface for the slope and gives the critical factor of safety of the slope, and also provides the slice information of each slice of the slope.
