Young teenagers are influenced to do drugs and alcohol substances to fit in a group. Social media has pressured a mass group of children to commit suicide. One image or text message could destroy someone’s life. Children are the easiest targets on social media. They lack knowledge to understand the real dangers of social media. Social media is designed to keep the viewer engaged as long as possible. Teens have sleepless nights due to this as their eyes are glued onto the screen. Identity theft victims on media have given banking details because they thought it would be a trustable person.
Social media can give us a wide perspective of the things around us. It is a powerful tool that could increase our knowledge to interacting with people across the planet. It can be used as an educational tool if used wisely. Mobile games could increase critical thinking skills and reaction time. Studies have shown that teenagers that have computers installed in their room do academically well. Social media has also given shy or socially awkward people the opportunity to interact with people they wouldn’t interact face-to-face. It boosts their self-esteem as it is easier to speak to someone through a phone. Social media has pleasured people with the sense of fulfillment. Teenagers feel that they are involved with social trends. Social media gives children the opportunity to support a cause or issue they feel strongly about.
As social media grows, less people communicate face-to-face. Platforms like Instagram. Snapchat and Facebook have made our generation less social. These platforms do have positive and negative aspects. Children and adults can share uncomfortable information they feel shy or embarrassed to share face-to-face. With around 300 friends on social media, there are a lot of distractions to grab their attention. You can share memories, reconnect with old friends, plan events and communicate instantaneously.
It is becoming easier to connect with people on social media as more people are getting phones. In the US, 64 percent of people have access to this powerful tool. This means that 206 million people in the US have smart phones. The quality of face-to-face interactions have decreased as technology as advanced. There has been a decrease of intimate and personal interaction between people.
Many studies have been done to prove that social media is making people less intelligent but have all failed. Social media does not make you less knowledgeable but distracts you from working. The youth of today has been distracted from school work. Pew Research Center and Common Sense Media surveyed 600 people and found 71 percent think technology is hurting their attention span. Social media could be seen negatively in education, but it does have many positive aspects. Teaching methods could be shown through the internet. There are many learning options and practical videos to understand the work.
We have found that social media could be a very powerful tool in our lives if used wisely. If used correctly, humans could work faster and more effectively. Ideas could be shared. We need to teach children to use this powerful tool to protect them from bad decisions. Social media is far from perfect, but far from a disaster. Social media is the future.
