The environment in which an individual with dementia eats can have a big impact on the amount they eat. It can be confusing for an individual with Dementia if they are eating in a noisy environment, it can make it difficult for them concentrate and focus. If this were the case the individual may not eat or end up moving away from the noise and leaving the room. Some individuals with Dementia may have a sight impairment so it is important that the individual has enough light to be able to see what they are eating. A calming and relaxing environment is needed and foods they like and enjoy as well as the help and support to enable them to eat and at a rate that is ideal for them, ensuring not to fast allowing them to swallow and enjoy the taste of their food. The individual may need to wear clothing protection if they tend to drop food. It may be easier for the individual with dementia to use their fingers to pick up food rather than struggle with cutlery, in some instances adapted cutlery may be necessary.
